Statement

At the very start of my art foundation course, I had to look into the idea of typography. I was asked to create the word ‘typography’ to visually communicate what it means. I made each letter separately and photographed them to make a set. My work on typography expanded further and I looked into creating a quote out of relevant typographical techniques. There are two quotes, which we planned and made in a small group – ‘all you need is love’ and ‘there is a fine line between love and hate’. Love is something that is never perfect, it can be ripped apart and put back together at will, which is why we chose to use a patchwork technique. In contrast to this, we looked at hate as being something that is painful and that hurts people. We represented this by using drawing pins. Each and every word that we used was carefully planned in its design and making.

After I picked graphics as my pathway course, I had a brief set that was based on contemporary nursery rhymes. This is where the two pieces of work based on ‘twinkle twinkle little star’ and ‘baa baa black sheep’ have come from. As part of this project, I researched nursery rhymes to find out what they really mean and then tried to relate them to modern day affairs.

One area of graphics that I am particularly interested in is photography, so I have included a couple of photos that I have taken as part of my current course.

I have also included several images from the life drawing class I take. Life drawing is something that I had never done before I started my art foundation course because I took graphics rather than fine art at GCSE and A level. I feel that the selection of images that I have chosen to include shows my development and progression over the last few months as well as a range of techniques. In life drawing, we are asked to push boundaries and move out of our comfort zone, and for this reason I have experimented with several different media including ink, charcoal, graphite and pastel. I also used different techniques such as drawing with my non-drawing hand, drawing while moving and drawing to music. Some drawings are quick studies while some are much more in depth and detailed.

The final post that I made is about me. I reflects the person that I am, but in a typographical way. To do this, I asked people to describe me in one word or to tell me what makes me the person that I am.

I would like to be part of the Graphic Design course at MMU because it is the area of art and design that I am passionate about. I have heard and read about MMU’s reputation and I have looked at previous student’s work. I would like the chance to continue to improve and widen my range of skills and abilities. All in all, it is a place that I would enjoy studying and I feel that I would fit right in.
